Almondbury Youth Action Project &
Almondbury Mobile Film Club 2008
The Almondbury Youth Action Project was setup in 2008 with the main
purpose of coordinating work with young people in the neighbourhood.
The Committee was and is made up of representatives of people who
are, broadly speaking, trying to engage people in worthwhile and
community focussed activity. Our Committee is made up of people
from the Kirklees Metropolitan Council Young People's Service, local
schools, neighbourhood wardens, police and Open Art, an Arts in
the Community Organisation based in Huddersfield Town Centre, and
including our Minister here at the Methodist Church, and two of
our members, John R as Treasurer, and Mike T as Chair.
We meet as frequently as is necessary and have organised various
events and activities including: two clean-ups of local areas; the
Shaping the Future and Forgiveness Projects; the Almondbury Flurry
(Fun Run linked to the Almondbury Gala) and more recently the Almondbury
Alive Project, which brought young people together with older people
to prepare an Exhibition and Film Show about Almondbury past and
present. We were fortunate to get funding from the Childrens Network
in Calderdale for this particular Project and we have now learned
that a bid for funding for a follow up Project, the Almondbury Mobile
Film Club, has been confirmed by the Awards For All Lottery Fund.
This latest Project is designed to follow up 'Almondbury Alive' by arranging for the showing of six films in various venues in the village, including The Wesley Centre, and enabling us, with the help of Open Art, to make at least two films about the neighbourhood which will also be shown to village audiences.
We are currently in discussion with the people who have been concerned about the future of the Library to make a film about the Library and the history surrounding it and the interest which has been generated by recent events.
We are grateful to Awards for All for making this new Project possible.
At the same time we are pursuing the development of the Almondbury Community Arts Project which was inspired by Paula B, and which has now been taken up by The Wesley Centre Management Committee, who have appointed a sub group to work with Open Art.
Again this will build on the foundations laid by the Almondbury Alive Project by encouraging wide local involvement in all aspects of the Arts: that is in painting, sculpture, music, dance and drama. We believe that we have a great heritage to preserve in Almondbury. At the same time it is important that we take into the future a community that is united, tolerant, and caring, a community in which people want to share experiences and work together towards a future in which people of all ages, and from all social backgrounds and cultures can live together in a flourishing community.
